Mini-Summit in D.C.

by admin on December 3, 2011
For those of you who missed the action in Elsah last month during the Euphrates Summit:  Our World Beyond 9/11, we would like to give you a chance to join in the conversation right here in DC!  You’re warmly invited to an intimate and informal gathering on Saturday, December 3rd, from 4:00 to 7:00, during which we can hear from the Euphrates founder, Janessa Gans Wilder, in addition to some of the speakers and participants from the conference about the incredible work they’re doing and their insights they have on how we can take our world “beyond 9/11″.  Through three sessions, “Inform, Inspire, and Transform” the participants heard about Middle East issues in a new way, all based on Einstein’s idea that ”Problems cannot be solved at the same level of thinking at which they were created.”
Come ready to discuss, ask questions, ponder ideas, and hear inspiring stories about how we can truly improve relations between the Middle East and West in the post-9/11 era.

Libby Hoffman Will Speak to Fellows

by admin on November 11, 2011

November 11, 2011. Libby Hoffman, co-founder of Fambul Tok International and President of Catalyst for Peace, will be speaking to the Euphrates Fellows.

Where: Perry Lounge, Principia College

When: Friday, November 11th from 4:00-6:30pm

Libby’s documentary, Fambul Tok, will be playing in the St. Louis International Film Festival on Saturday, November 12th at 6:00pm at Washington University (Brown Hall Auditorium).

Libby’s Bio

Libby Hoffman co-founded Fambul Tok and has partnered in its implementation since its inception, through her position as President of Catalyst for Peace, a US-based private foundation.  She continues her leadership role with Fambul Tok as the President of Fambul Tok International.

Ms. Hoffman has been active in peacebuilding for over 20 years in a variety of capacities – professor, trainer, facilitator, program director, consultant, and funder.  A former Political Science professor atPrincipia College, Ms. Hoffman left academia to focus on the practice of conflict resolution and peacebuilding.  She has developed and led conflict resolution training programs in corporate, congregational, educational and community settings.  She was a founder and Executive Director of Peace Discovery Initiatives, which pioneered in positive approaches to peacebuilding, as well as in mobilizing religious resources for peace.  She has designed, convened and facilitated backchannel Middle East peacemaking initiatives and worked to bring grassroots Israeli and Palestinian peacemakers together with American policymakers.  She advocated for religion to be used as a constructive element of this peacemaking process and pioneered in techniques for doing this, culminating in the establishment of the Center for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University.

Ms. Hoffman founded Catalyst for Peace in 2003, crafting a unique hybrid funder/practitioner role.  Her vision and leadership have fostered programming that is responsive to on-the-ground, real-time social and political realities by facilitating total community ownership and participation in the reconciliation process. Prior to dedicating its focus to Fambul Tok, Catalyst programs mobilized religious resources for peace in northern Uganda, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and India; mobilized and supported community reconciliation in post-conflict Africa; and developed cutting-edge storytelling and communications channels to support these two focus areas.

From 2005-2008, Ms. Hoffman partnered with the United Religions Initiative (URI) and noted international peacebuilder John Paul Lederach in the design and implementation of a 2-year pilot training program in inter-religious peacebuilding.  She continues to consult on translating the learning from the pilot into an ongoing, sustainable training program for URI.  In support of this partnership, Catalyst produced two short films telling the story of the work of these grassroots interfaith peacebuilders,  We Unite and Faith Into Action.  Ms. Hoffman is producing a major documentary film on Fambul Tok, to be completed in summer, 2010.

Ms. Hoffman holds an M.A.L.D. from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a BA in Political Science from Williams College.

Euphrates Summit: Our World Beyond 9/11

by admin on October 27, 2011
ANNOUNCING a groundbreaking event, the Euphrates Summit: Our World Beyond 9/11, held at Principia College this October 27th and 28th.  On the heels of memorials and reflections marking the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, the Euphrates Institute offers a new way forward in America’s relationship with the Middle East.  The Summit will bring together visionaries on global issues and an audience of change agents to create a platform for paradigm shifts on the Middle East.  Joined by Euphrates’ Warriors for Peace®, the next generation of peace and sustainability leaders focused on the Middle East, participants in the Summit will explore ideas for progress and new levels of thinking in this post-9/11 era.

The Summit takes place at Euphrates’ partnering institution, Principia College, a four-year liberal arts college with a century-old institutional history. The National Historic Landmark campus is perched on the Mississippi River bluffs about 30 miles north of St. Louis. The two-day Summit, Thursday and Friday, October 27th and 28th, will include three sessions designed around Euphrates’ IIT approach – to Inform, Inspire, and Transform. An expert-led, in-depth overview of the status of the Middle East – West relations will kick things off Thursday morning for the Inform session, followed by a look at inspiring models of peace, coexistence, and cooperation from the globe’s most successful peacemakers in the Inspire session.  Friday will focus on “bringing the ideas home” as peacemakers provide not only the reasons, but the tools for each one of us to heal divides, take personal responsibility, and commit to action in the Transform session.

Speakers at the Summit include Dr. James Zogby, head of the Arab American Institute, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran Ambassador John Limbert, Rev. Can. Charles Gibbs, head of United Religions Initiative, Manal Omar, current Middle East Programs director at USIP, Tom Quiggin, a court-qualified expert on terrorism, Israeli peacemaker Dr. Yehuda Stolov, and Sami Awad, executive director of Palestinian non-profit Holy Land Trust, among over a dozen other speakers from the Middle East, the U.S., and Canada.
Two days spent delving into one of the greatest questions of the age — our relationship with the Middle East — is an opportunity not to be missed!
To register for the Summit, watch it live on-line, or learn more about the event, visit www.euphratessummit.com, or send an email to info@euphratesinstitute.org for more information.
