Jordan Elgrably
Jordan Elgrably is an Arab Jew who cofounded Levantine Cultural Center during the summer of 2001 with several other Americans of Middle Eastern/North African heritage. A writer, editor, curator and producer, Jordan is of French and Moroccan origin. As a public speaker and organizer, he has been passionately committed to strengthening Arab/Muslim and Jewish relations for many years. Among the subjects he writes and speaks about are the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Middle Eastern identities, and how the arts can be presented as a form of cultural diplomacy. He founded the New Association of Sephardi/Mizrahi Artists & Writers Int’l. in 1996 and Open Tent Middle East Coalition in 1999.
Jordan is the director of the Levantine Cultural Center, which has presented hundreds of public programs to more than 50,000 people in Southern California. In 2008, the L.A Weekly featured Jordan in its People of the Year issue. That same year he received the Local Hero Award from the Foundation for World Arts and Cultures and the EarthWays Foundation. In 2011 he was nominated for a James Irvine Leadership Award, and became a fellow in the Annenberg Foundation’s Alchemy Partner program.
He attended the American University of Paris (formerly ACP) and was based for a number of years in Paris and Madrid, where he worked as a journalist and associate producer for TF1. His essays, articles and stories have appeared in many anthologies and periodicals. More recently his op-eds have appeared on the web sites of Al Jazeera English, Alternet.org and Poets & Writers.
